Active Tests vs Service Resets vs Coding
These scanner terms are not interchangeable. Buying the wrong tier is how DIY repairs get stuck.
Buyer note: This guide compares scanner listings, function claims, update terms, and ownership tradeoffs. Service support varies by vehicle.

Active tests command a component
An active test tells a module to do something: pulse an ABS pump, cycle a fan, command a relay, open a valve, or move an actuator. This is the feature most buyers mean when they ask for a bidirectional scanner.
Active tests are powerful, but they are also highly module-specific. A scanner may command one actuator on one vehicle and not expose the same routine on another.

Service resets complete a maintenance workflow
Service resets are guided routines for jobs like EPB brake service, battery registration, oil reset, SAS calibration, DPF regeneration, ABS bleed, or throttle relearn. They may include active commands, prerequisites, ignition cycles, and warnings.
This is where a job-specific scanner page usually converts better than a generic best-scanner roundup.

Coding is not programming
Coding often means changing configurable settings or adaptations inside a module. Programming usually means flashing or writing module software. Many Amazon scanner listings blur those terms, so buyers should be skeptical of broad coding claims and very skeptical of anything that sounds like module programming below pro-shop tiers.
If module replacement or flashing is the job, confirm the exact workflow before buying any consumer scanner.
